Senior Citizens

Senior citizens club Ivory Park

Yvonne Phogolo, Sinnah Ramakhula and Rosemary Mvulane, board member of Kindness Corporation have shared so many interesting stories about this group of elderly people who have refused to become victims of both their economic circumstances and their old age! True to the name of their club Miyibuye name which means “bring back what was lost”… they are energetic, thankful and happy to have one another as support system.

It wasn’t always like this … a few years back Rosemary and Yvonne, both social workers, found this group of seniors who really needed uplifting. Depression, chronic illnesses and no hope for the future set this group of senior citizens back, they were merely existing and an outing to the clinic once a month, if that, was an occasion.

Rosemary took it upon herself to change things for them. First things first, she taught them personal hygiene, don’t show up if you are not washed and dressed for engagement with others. Secondly, that tea tray that you used to prepare for your employers, how about doing one for yourself? They had to come to the meetings with a tray set for lunch, their best crockery and cutlery to match their best outfits…. That was the start of Mayibuye.

Today, they do bead craft to sell, they knit and sew, and they sell their wares at flea markets. Not sitting back waiting for handouts.

Various excursions are arranged for this group, they want to get out there and their ultimate goal is to go to Durban for a week and swim in the sea!

Ballroom dancing with Quintus Jansen at his studio, visiting Grand Central Airport, cooking with Meals on Wheels, and every Friday’s get meeting is an occasion.

Dressed in their pink shirts and black skirts/trousers – this group arrives as a united front!

Sinnah has an amazing rapport with the group and she facilitates the tough conversations. Drug abuse amongst their children and grandchildren, being exploited for the little they have, depression, loss of their partners and life in general. It’s heart-rending to hear what they have to go through. That’s why their Friday meetings is so important to them. Their time to share, care, enjoy a meal and unwind. We would love to keep this opportunity going.

At Christmas time, there’s a party with a DJ, dancing and of course a special meal. We end the year off with a bang! We’re there to help make this possible, because as we constantly say, kindness does start with us.

This is a sponsorship opportunity that will not cost the earth, so if you want to help us make a difference, please get in touch and pledge on our website. Every little act of kindness goes a long, long way.
